Usually curb and gutter are constructed together at a site. They keep rain and melting snow on the street and flowing toward sewers and collection points and define allowable driving surfaces to better protect pedestrians especially children. Curb and gutter is a type of curb with a gutter pan which is commonly referred to on all blueprints as curb and gutter. It is abutted with a gutter which is a flat concrete slab that drains out water away from the yard.

Prowag allows a maximum change in grade of 13 3 between the bottom of a curb ramp and the gutter pan. In most cases the height of the curb ramp across the gutter pan will be minimal two inches or less but the side slopes of this extension should be tapered out at a minimum slope of three horizontal to one vertical. Curb is a short wall installed to hold the pavement from the sides and act as a barrier between yard and street. If the standard cdot curb and gutter template is used at curb ramps the requirement for a 5 maximum counter slope at the bottom of the curb ramp will not be met.
